Lunch 'n Learn: Delivering Compliant MOBs for Today’s Healthcare Environment

  • This is an Online Event (map)

Healthcare providers can offer a huge variety of services on an outpatient basis. Such services frequently take place, not in a hospital, but in facilities we commonly refer to as “medical office buildings (MOBs)”. But what is an MOB? The term is not used in code. Rather, it is a catch-all phrase for two distinct types of B Occupancy healthcare buildings: outpatient clinics and ambulatory care facilities. These two facility types have significantly different code and compliance requirements. Building the wrong one can have costly consequences.

This presentation will help designers and healthcare facilities personnel distinguish between outpatient clinics and ambulatory care facilities, identify the code requirements that come into play depending on the facility type, and understand the decision path they need to follow for compliance. It will identify questions healthcare staff and designers need to ask – and answer – during planning and design.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Describe key healthcare functions that differentiate an ambulatory care facility from an outpatient clinic

2. Explain when a medical office building needs to follow FGI Guidelines and receive accreditation

3. Identify important questions to answer early in the project, so that the team plans, budgets, and designs a code-compliant facility

4. Describe the requirements for emergency power and fire alarm for outpatient clinics and ambulatory centers

5. Describe the requirements for ventilation and plumbing in outpatient clinics and ambulatory centers
