Design – S/M/L

A presentation of the salient design features of three of the 2021 AIA Cleveland Design Award Winning Projects.   Each project takes its design inspiration from the local context to deliver maximum impact no matter the scale of the project.  Featured projects range in size from small, The Garvey Shade Pavilion by JKurtz Architects; to medium, the CWRU Maltz Performing Arts Center by DLR Group; to large, The Tappan by Bialosky Cleveland. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of the designers.

Johnathan Kurtz, AIA of JKurtz Architects will present the Garvey Shade Pavilion in Dorchester, Massachusetts.  The project is conceived as a lattice of alternating fins that permit a variety of dappled shade conditions for users.  The unique steel shapes, commonly used as stiffeners in ship and bridge building, offer a superior strength to weight ratio in comparison to angles or bars and reference Boston’s storied shipbuilding legacy.

Ron Reed, FAIA of DLR Group will present Maltz Performing Arts Center for Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  The project is an addition to a historic temple which provides educational and performance spaces for the university's theater and dance departments.  The design defers to the original temple and avoids competition with the dome, taking its cues from the lower massing of the landmark building.

Larissa Burlij, AIA of Bialosky Cleveland will present The Tappan located in the Scranton Corridor of Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.  The project is a 95-unit urban infill apartment complex with a courtyard that fosters community within the building.  The nicely articulated materials evoke elements of stitching and weaving and were inspired by the neighborhood’s rich textile heritage.
