Permaculture 101 for Architects

  • This is an Online Event (map)

Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture, there is not possibility of a stable social order. Permaculture designs can and have been be implemented on any size lot, from 1/4 acre urban lots, to 5,000 acre ranches. This course is an introduction to Permaculture principals and practices.

An integrated Permaculture design will help your projects be more sustainable from the building envelope to the property line. Working with a Permaculture Design Consultant (PDC) will help the planning and design of the project better benefit the environment, meet client sustainability goals, help provide food security, and add functional beauty to the project.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Participants will be able to define the term 'Permaculture', and how the addition of a Permaculture Design Consultant (PDC) can benefit the sustainability of any given project as a whole.

2. Participants will be able to describe the process through which a permaculture designer makes design decisions, and determine the project benefits of retaining a PDC.

3. Participants will be able to identify and explain key Permaculture strategies such as guilds, hügelkultur, Managed Intensive Grazing, and swale design, and be able to recognize the project benefits of these strategies.

4. Participants will be able to identify the three key ethics of Permaculture, and may choose to apply these ethics to their own design projects
