Lunch & Learn: How to Make the Most of Energy Modeling from SD Through Post-Occupancy

In this course, we’ll explore how design teams can use energy modeling to its greatest potential, maximizing its impact for the project and owner. We’ll discuss how energy modeling helps teams achieve key project outcomes like design optimization, improved environmental impact, LEED certification, and energy and money savings. We’ll look at the questions that energy modeling helps teams answer at every stage of a project, discussing specific goals, variables, and key performance indicators. We’ll also talk about different energy modeling tools and the right timing for using them, so teams can make the biggest impact at the lowest cost. The presentation is loosely organized around the 11 modeling cycles described in ASHRAE 209-2018: Energy Simulation Aided Design.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Explain the goals of energy modeling at each phase of a project. Explain when energy modeling tends to have the greatest cost/benefit impact on a project, so that participants can effectively plan how to incorporate energy modeling.

  • Describe the major components of a building design that affect its energy performance, so participants can assess these components at the appropriate phases of the project

  • Describe two different motives that owners may have for pursuing energy modeling, and explain how the owner’s motive can impact the design team’s focus and priorities.

  • Describe different tools that an energy modeler uses to show building performance.
