Hard Hat Tour - Joseph & Emma Smith Home Restoration

Led by DS Architecture, AIA Akron members and guests are invited to join us for a hardhat tour of the Joseph and Emma Smith home and grounds on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022 at 5:00 PM in Kirtland, Ohio.

This project consists of several structures which are each a various form of historic preservation. The Home, Store, Restroom Building, and adjacent Joseph Smith Sr. Home, gardens, and orchard will all be discussed on the tour. The property is immediately adjacent to the historic Kirtland Temple and cemetery which will also be included in the tour for context as to the significance of the home and store and how they played a part in the history of the Latter Day Saints Church. Other historic structures on the adjacent property may also be toured for those that are interested.

All attendees must provide and wear their own hard hats and closed-toe shoes. Dinner at Hola Tacos in Willoughby is included after the program.

Attendees receive 1.5 AIA HSW LU.

The agenda for the tour is as follows: - 5:00 PM Meet at Historic Kirtland Visitors Center (7800 Kirtland Chardon Rd, Kirtland, OH 44094) for a brief tour of the Whitney Home (previously completed project) to provide some context for the general scope of work for the project that is currently under construction. -5:15 PM Head up the hill to the project site at 8980 Chillicothe Rd Kirtland, OH 44094. Parking is available around the site. - 5:30 PM Tour the project site starting with the home and restroom building, then proceeding to the store site across the street. - 6:30 PM Leave for Hola Tacos for dinner. They are located at 3941 Erie St 1st Level, Willoughby, OH 44094.
